Dr. Prasad Katulanda – Chairman

Dr. Prasad Katulanda is one of Sri Lanka’s leading consultant endocrinologists and diabetologists as well as Chairman of CDEM. He is one of the most sought-after consultants in the South Asian region and has committed himself to the fight against diabetes and its related-complications here in Sri Lanka.

He has not only tirelessly worked to revolutionise diabetology and endocrinology in Sri Lanka but has pioneered new consultation techniques by heading a research group at the Diabetes Research Unit at the Colombo University.

His efforts, in terms of diabetes awareness and education in the country, have set him apart from his peers. He has engaged in both undergraduate and post-graduate training while also serving as an external examiner for the final MBBS medicine at the universities of Galle, Peradeniya, Sri Jayawardenapura, Kelaniya and Jaffna.

Having been the recipient of numerous awards along his illustrious career, he is a household name in Sri Lanka. Among an unending list of prestigious awards, Dr. Katulanda received the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) in Sri Lanka 2009 award in Medical Research, the Wijerama Award for the Young Physician of the Year 2004, Henry Rajaratnam Prize for the Best Paper in Diabetes and Endocrinology and the Best National Paper on Prevention of Blindness in 2006.

Dr. Katulanda is also a life member of the Sri Lanka Diabetes Association, the Sri Lanka Medical Association, the Endocrinology Society of Sri Lanka, the Ceylon College of Physicians, and the Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, he served as a Council Member of the Sri Lanka Medical Association in 2000 and a member of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group.

He has held various positions in esteemed committees and institutes including the Endocrine Society of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Medical Association, the Ceylon College of Physicians and the NCD Committee at the Ministry of Health. He has even taken up important posts in international committees which includes his tenure as the Country Director of the ASCEND (Asian Collaboration for Excellence in Non-communicable Diseases) programme, an Executive Committee Member of the Asia Study Group and an Overseas Honorary Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism – Harris Manchester Academy.
