Sleep Disorders Treatment

If you snore at night, feel sleepy or drowsy during the day, or feel tired even after a good night sleep, you could be suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). This is a common problem that could go undiagnosed or untreated but could lead to serious complications such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, impotence, changes in personality and behaviour, or even sudden cardiac death.

What is OSA?

OSA is caused by the patient’s breathing being interrupted while in a state of deep sleep, as a result of the temporary closure of the upper airway that carries air to the lungs. Obesity is a common risk factor for the development of OSA as the build-up of fat deposits in the neck and around the throat can make the upper airway narrower. When sleeping, all the muscles that are kept open during the day relax, making the airways even narrower, causing snoring. In deep sleep, these airways can close completely, causing the person to stop breathing – a condition more commonly referred to as apnoea.
This condition will usually force a person out of deep sleep or even wake them up. This can lead to patients feeling tired and sleepy during the day, causing a drastic loss of productivity and even accidents. The release of stress hormones into the blood could also lead to more serious complications.

Effective treatment

The CDEM Sleep Medicine Centre offers patients effective treatment to combat sleep apnoea with access to a team of highly experience consultant specialists. We conduct comprehensive sleep assessments which look for sleep-related disorders and monitor breathing, air flow, oxygen levels, and heart rate. Furthermore, we treat patients who suffer from OSA with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Ventilation or CPAP which is a small machine with a mask which produces a jet of air that splints the upper airway open while patients are asleep. The treatment prevents snoring and ensures that you wake up each morning refreshed and recharged.
In addition to this, we also offer weight reduction tips, diets, and exercises designed by our team of nutritionists.
