Weight Management

You may be unaware that many men, women and children in Sri Lanka are over the stipulated healthy weight range. Obesity is a disease that can increase the risk of many serious diseases and conditions including diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney diseases, heart attacks, strokes, sleeping disturbances, breathing problems, liver disease, arthritis and even cancer. Obesity also affects men, women and children in different ways. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome as well as depression are common to all, but men run the additional risk of suffering from obesity-related erectile dysfunction while complications such as reduced fertility and menstrual irregularities, as well as cancer of the breast and womb are complications that could arise in women suffering from obesity. Children may have to deal with complications related to behaviour and learning, stunting their progress at school.

Personalised treatment

The CDEM Obesity Centre is geared to taking care of all obesity-related complications with its evidence-based, scientifically-proven, obesity programmes designed separately for men, women and children. CDEM’s specialised team of experienced endocrinologists, clinical nutritionists, chest physicians, bariatric surgeons, and laboratory consultants, assisted by a team of dieticians, physiotherapists, behavioural therapists and medical officers are dedicated to providing patients with holistic care in terms of treatment and prevention.
The team manages the patient’s weight, offers dietary and exercise advice, monitors hormonal levels and metabolic markers. Unlike other obesity centres, we look for co-morbidities caused by obesity, as well as secondary causes such as thyroidal, adrenal, and genetic issues.
CDEM is ever-willing to go the extra mile to ensure patient wellbeing and will therefore conduct regular follow-ups with patients – calling them once a week to ensure that appointments are met, treatment is being followed and further questions can be answered.

Defeating obesity through awareness

Those suffering with obesity are not the only ones who are affected by it. Due to the various complications that can arise through the disease, obesity can often affect the lifestyles of those living alongside the patient. This is why CDEM is also committed to education and building awareness through its vigorous educational programme which not only targets the patients but their families as well. Programmes are conducted for kids, youths and adults with special programmes for expectant parents.
